History of the National Park
Manuel Antonio National Park showcases Costa Rican pride and community collaboration to perfection. The region was considered one of the most densely populated forests with its great biodiversity. For centuries the town of Quepos existed and was famous as one of the most beautiful regions of Costa Rica. The beauty of the region was already taken for granted until the area came into the hands of developers. When the intentions of the contractors became clear and trees were cut down behind a cordoned off area, the residents of Quepos came together and demanded the protection of the area.
In 1972, the park was created and named after a conquistador buried in the area. Manuel Antonio National Park expanded in 1980 and now welcomes a large number of tourists every day.
